Mapping Medical Schools Worldwide
The Human Development Index (HDI) was introduced through the first United Nations Human Development Report (1990) and is a way of measuring development by combining indicators of life expectancy, educational attainment and income into a composite index. This data, compounded with the International Medical Education Directory mapping of the distribution of medical schools worldwide, demonstrates a correlation between low human development and limited access to medical education.
SWME's Doctor Sponsorship Program considers a community's level of need, measured by common HDI indicators, when considering candidates for sponsorship to attend CPD Worldwide Activities. The program is open to doctors from developing countries that battle widespread health problems. Doctors are selected by the SWME's Advisory Board based on merit and humanitarian achievement. Access to medical education is another important factor considered by the Advisory Board when selecting candidates for sponsorship, as many originate from countries with limited educational resoures and facilites.
